In no secret that earthquakes are more likely to occur in some parts of the world than others. As such, when buildings are constructed in areas where seismic activity is likely to occur, building codes and standards require seismic bracing of ducts and pipes. But before you can properly select and specify mechanical equipment products for installation in seismic zones, you first have to understand the duct and pipe installation best practices. This course curated by Steven Liescheidt, PE, CCS, CCPR discusses the installation processes for seismic restraints of ducts and pipes. In particular, it describes the basics of how to attach duct and pipe to a building to minimize earthquake damage. Many attachment examples are presented throughout the course, including the anchoring and use of special devices called seismic restraint devices. The material in this online mechanical and structural engineering course doesn't supersede code requirements, but rather, provides a solid framework to understand the practical requirements for installing mechanical equipment that requires seismic bracing.
