PDH UNITS: 6
This course provides information of interest to planners and designers of small water systems. Such systems generally cannot benefit from economies of scale, and proper management and operation are critical to produce satisfactory finished water quality. The major emphasis of this course is on the design of systems that will be effective and reliable, requiring a level of operation and management activity commensurate with their physical size and available sources. This course is intended for civil engineers, municipal engineers, and environmental engineers. An attendee of this course will gain knowledge about planning and design of small water systems. In this course, you need to review the material in the course content file, "Design of Small Water Systems," which is composed of the U.S Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Manual: EM-1110-2-503 – Design of Small Water Systems. Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions to earn 6 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on the entire document.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the preliminary planning and design of small water systems as well as the general provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act.
- Assess the principles of water quantity requirement estimation and options for small water source systems (e.g. groundwater and surface water sources).
- Recognize the general principles of and uses for standard water treatment processes, including disinfection, iron & manganese removal, hardness removal, taste and odor removal, stabilization and corrosion control, turbidity removal, total dissolved solids removal, control of organic substances, and membrane technologies.
- Determine the procedures used in planning for pumping storage and distribution of water.
