Engineers practicing their profession encounter not only technical issues but ethical issues as well. Sometimes the latter is easy for us engineers to resolve by applying everyday, commonsense notions of honesty, openness, responsibility and lawfulness. Other times, however, matters are more complicated—especially when 2 or more duties or obligations conflict. For example, an engineer's duty to his client or employer may conflict with the engineer's duty to the general public. So what should you do in these situations? How can engineers overcome their various (and often simultaneously held) roles as 1) guardians of public health, safety, and welfare 2) employees, 3) employers, and 4) providers of technical service to clients? Uncover the codes of ethics that have been formulated to help engineers address such conflicts in the present course. In particular, this PDH-accredited course will explore the National Society of Professional Engineers Code of Ethics.
