PDH UNITS: 3
This discussion course discussions methods and technologies for treatment of contaminated soil in situ (without substantive excavation of the soil). Course Outline 1. BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT 2. CHEMICAL OXIDATION 3. PERMEABLE TREATMENT BEDS 4. SOIL FLUSHING 5. VAPOR EXTRACTION This course will give environmental engineers, civil engineers and other professional engineers and construction managers an introduction to the principles and practices that are the basis of in situ treatment of contaminated soil.
Learning Objectives
At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:- Learn about biological treatment of organic contaminants;
- Learn how biodegradation has been used for treatment of oily sludges and refinery waste;
- Learn how tests must be made to determine if microorganisms are naturally occurring which will breakdown the target chemicals;
- Learn which design criteria are the key factors for biodegradation;
- Learn how with in-situ leachate treatment a reactant may be introduced into the contaminated region to interact with the leachate plume;
- Learn about the design criteria for chemical injection systems;
- Learn how permeable treatment beds may be employed;
- Learn how limestone may be employed to neutralize acidic ground water and remove heavy metals such as Cd, Fe, and Cr.; and
- Learn when activate carbon may be employed to remove certain contaminants.
