Intended Audience: all non-electrical engineers
PDH UNITS: 8
This course caters, mainly, to Engineers, Technicians and Facilities Managers who are not intimately familiar with Electrical Engineering Principles and Practices. Through this course, attendees are expected to learn basic principles of electricity in a simple, easy to understand, format. This course will enable attendees to accomplish straightforward and common calculations associated with voltage, current, power and power factor. Charts and tables, as alternate means for current, voltage and power estimation, will be presented. Practical examples of electrical applications, in industrial settings, will be covered. Electrical, equipment, components, devices and test instrumentation will be discussed. Important concepts in electrical safety will be introduced.
Learning Objectives
At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:- Principles of Electricity, AC and DC. Phasor, polar and rectangular representation of AC. Brief introduction to three phase AC. Where possible, fundamental concepts of electrical engineering are explained with analogies and parallels in the mechanical, hydraulics and civil engineering realms.
- Power factor, power quality, load factor, service factor, etc.
- Electrical Equipment and Instrumentation in Industrial Applications. This would include motors, transformers, switchgear, over current protection devices, power/energy monitoring systems.
- NEC, National Electrical Code and Safety; including a brief introduction to NFPA 70 E, Arc Flash Requirements.
- Electrical Control Systems; i.e. PLC’s, Control Diagrams, Drives and Sensors and examples of automation systems.
- Understanding Electrical Drawings and Documentation.
- Understanding Electrical Power Bills and Ways to Reduce the Energy Cost.
