Intended Audience: Civil and Structure Engineers.

PDH UNITS: 4

The objective of this course is to assist a licensed design professional, practicing structural engineers, forensic structural engineers, consulting engineers, building officials,  educators, students and/or a licensed general contractor to deeply know, and understand the structural analysis, seismic design, detailing, and constructability of precast concrete diaphragms.  The importance of this course lies in the fact that there are not a sufficient number of references dealing with this topic, so the course was designed to be a guide for the structural engineers. This course is intended especially for the practicing structural engineer, though it will also be useful for building officials, educators, and students.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • Gaining a general overview on the precast concrete diaphragm applications
  • Gaining a general overview on the typical precast diaphragm details
  • Gaining a general overview on the connection to the seismic force-resisting system
  • Gaining a general overview on the practical connection considerations
  • Gaining a general overview on the seismic behavior of precast concrete diaphragms in past earthquakes
  • Gaining a general overview on the precast concrete diaphragm design based on ASCE/SEI 7-22
  • Gaining a general overview on the diaphragm design force level
  • Gaining a general overview on the alternative diaphragm design force
  • Familiarizing with detailed hand-on practical examples
  • Familiarizing with different methods of diaphragm analysis
  • Familiarizing with precast concrete diaphragm design procedure
  • Familiarizing with diaphragm design and detailing for flexure and shear
  • Familiarizing with detailing and constructability issues
