Intended Audience: All Engineers interested in recent changes in Florida law affecting engineering practice.

PDH UNITS: 1

This course is designed to meet the Florida Board of Professional Engineers continuing education requirement that a minimum of 1 PDH per renewal period must be devoted to study of recent changes (that affect engineering practice) in Chapter 61G15 of the Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C), “Board of Professional Engineers Organization & Purpose” Chapter 455 of Title XXXII of the Florida Statutes – “Business and Professional Regulation: General Provisions” Chapter 471 of Title XXXII of the Florida Statutes - “Engineering” The course is for the current biennial cycle, 2023-2025 (renewal date of February 28, 2025). The changes described in the course went into effect during the immediately preceding biennium cycle, 2021-2023. Examples of recent disciplinary actions taken by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers are also included. This course is intended for engineers seeking to satisfy the requirement of the Florida Board of Professional Engineers that 1 PDH per renewal period must be devoted to study of recent changes in Florida law affecting engineering practice. This course is based on Florida Laws and Rules for Professional Engineers Biennium Cycle 2023-2025, written by Mark Rossow.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • Participants will be able to describe the purpose and organization of the Structural Engineering Recognition Program.
  • Participants will be able to state in general terms the range of disciplinary guidelines from which disciplinary penalties will be imposed on practitioners guilty of violating Chapters 455 or 471, F.S. or rules promulgated under these statutes.
  • Participants will be able to acknowledge that the costs of investigation and prosecution related to a disciplinary case will be borne by the licensee.
  • Participants will be able to describe when a Notice of Noncompliance is appropriately issued.
  • Participants will be able to state the importance of making it clear, when signing and sealing documents, what edition of a code or standard was used in preparing the documents.

    Generally useful course. Consider adding a few examples from Florida in particular. For example, the collapse of the university walkway, or other examples. Florida is growing rapidly. Infrastructure development is not keeping up with population, and it would be useful to highlight ethical issues in such a market
