PDH UNITS: 3

Several kinds of pipe flow calculations can be conveniently computed with the Darcy-Weisbach equation and Moody friction factor using Excel. Because many of these calculations require iteration, they're especially suitable for an Excel spreadsheet solution. How can you use Excel spreadsheets to make these calculations? Dive in to our online course developed by Dr. Bengston to explore how you can use the Darcy-Weisbach equation, the parameters in the equation, and the U.S. and S.I. units using example calculations and sample Excel spreadsheets. This course is intended primarily for civil engineers, mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, and environmental engineers. After successfully completing this course, you'll be able to make calculations with the Darcy Weisbach equation and the Moody friction factor equations in order to calculate several different unknown parameters given sufficient input data. You'll also be prepared to use Excel spreadsheets to efficiently make these calculations. To get started, please review the material in the pdf file, "Pipe Flow-Friction Factor Calculations with Excel." Once you complete the course review, please complete the 15-question multiple choice quiz  to earn 3 PDH credits.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss how to:
  • Calculate the Reynolds number and entrance length for pipe flow with specified flow conditions
  • Determine whether a specified pipe flow is laminar or turbulent flow for specified flow conditions
  • Determine a value of the Moody friction factor from the Moody diagram, for given Re and ?/D
  • Calculate a value of the Moody friction factor for given Re and ?/D, using the Moody friction factor equations
  • Use the Darcy Weisbach equation and the Moody friction factor equations to calculate the frictional head loss and frictional pressure drop for a given flow rate of a specified fluid through a pipe with known diameter, length and roughness (i.e. specified/allowable head loss)
  • Use the Darcy Weisbach equation and the Moody friction factor equations to calculate the required diameter for a given flow rate of a specified fluid through a pipe with known length, roughness, and allowable head loss
  • Ue the Darcy Weisbach equation and the Moody friction factor equations to calculate the fluid flow rate through a pipe with known diameter, length and roughness
  • Use the course spreadsheet to make pipe flow/friction factor calculations
