Intended Audience: Mechanical & Electrical Engineers

PDH UNITS: 1

This PDH describes the current state of motor technology and estimates opportunities for energy savings through application of more advanced technologies in a variety of residential and commercial end uses. It also explains BLDC motor, its working and applications. This course narrates types of motors, their usage in residential and industrial section and explains in details about BLDC motors. Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors are one of the motor types rapidly gaining popularity. BLDC motors are used in industries such as Appliances, Automotive, Aerospace, Consumer, Medical, Industrial Automation Equipment and Instrumentation. As the name implies, BLDC motors do not use brushes for commutation; instead, they are electronically commutated. BLDC motors have many advantages over brushed DC motors and induction motors.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • Classification of Motors
  • Parameters related to motors
  • Energy saving potential in BLDC / permanent magnet motor
  • Construction of the BLDC motor
  • Operation of the BLDC motor
  • Comparison with Induction and Brushed DC motors
