Determine the important considerations for and benefits of using chilled beams in laboratories in our PDH-accredited course developed by industry expert Steven Liescheidt, PE, CCS, CCPR. A growing technology in many building types such as laboratories, chilled beams are fundamentally different from the all air diffusers used throughout most buildings across the United States. Chilled beams in laboratories can accommodate sensible and latent loads. But although they may not be appropriate for every lab environment, chilled beams in properly designed labs can offer many unique benefits. While the central air handling system provides the latent cooling in properly designed labs, chilled beams provide the sensible cooling. As with any new technology, however, chilled beam systems require extra care and additional design time to ensure that all possible problems are avoided. This online HVAC engineering course is based on the publication, "Chilled Beams in Laboratories: Key Strategies to Ensure Effective Design, Construction, and Operation", EPA June 2009.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • How chilled beams work
  • Benefits of chilled beams in labs
  • How to design effective chilled beam systems
  • Controls and integration
  • Energy modeling challenges
  • Construction and installation considerations
  • Code compliance
  • Commissioning of chilled beams
