Industrial and Commercial Energy Conservation

Before determining how to best reduce the energy costs of industrial and/or commercial environments, it's important to have a thorough understanding of the latest concepts and practices in energy conservation. Are you up-to-speed on the best practices in energy planning, management, and auditing?

Get the latest elements, applications and equations involved in energy conservation and utility tax reduction.

Whether you're an engineer, technician, facility manager or any other professional in either a commercial or industrial setting, this PDH course is designed to help you learn the most efficient means to reduce your facility's energy costs.

Course Outline

This course will begin by addressing the usage, cost, and conservation of energy in its more common forms (e.g. electrical, compressed air, natural gas, steam, and heat). We'll then review the various ways to reduce energy output through specific, well-planned and results-oriented energy conservation projects. For example, we'll cover energy conservation projects in industrial settings and others pursued in collaboration with and through sponsorship of local utility companies. Furthermore, some of the myths associated with electricity and gas contracts will be presented, as well as the fundamental components and practical examples of energy audits, tools and monitoring systems. We'll also examine a cost justification case study to take a real-life look at the life-cycle costs of energy conservation projects. In particular, this section walks through how to get funding for particular projects using a Project Flow Chart and Project Gantt Chart. This PDH engineering course will conclude with an examination of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and specific utility tax clarifications.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this PDH engineering course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss the following:
  • Review energy fundamentals, forms (lighting, HVAC, etc.), facts, definitions, statistics and savings opportunities.
  • Learn the calculations and analysis of different electric utility rate schedules to reduce utility costs.
  • Understand the "secret sauce" components of energy performance contracting, load factor, power factor correction and power reduction through the lens of a real-life case study.
  • Learn how to design Energy Monitoring Systems and Building Management Systems (EMS/BMS) to monitor energy use in facilities in real-time and develop a historical profile.
  • Identify when and how to design EMS/BMS systems to control specific power devices, manage load factors or Peak Shave.
  • Examine the ins and outs of lighting control through EMS routines, lighting systems and analysis, and Lighting Tax Deduction.
  • Be versed on cogeneration systems and cycles, on-site generation and emerging renewable energy technologies.
  • Explore proven energy conservation elements and practices for automated HVAC systems, steam systems, and compressed air systems.
  • Identify strategic HVAC maintenance and performance tips, automated field devices, the refrigeration cycle and specific examples HVAC control strategies.
  • Examine the different types of energy audits and required equipment.
  • Discover the "low-hanging fruit”  of energy conservation tips to maximize savings.
  • Explore how to financially justify the implementation of new energy conservation projects.
  • Determine how to best combat growing energy problems in energy production and consumption according to the 2005 Energy Policy ACT.
