New Considerations for Steel Connection Design
What are the limit states and detailing requirements that should be considered during the design of critical steel connections? Join leading professor and industry expert Mustafa Mahamid, PhD, SE, PE, P.Eng, F.SEI, F.ASCE, for a comprehensive online seminar exploring the specifics of designing steel connections.Structural Steel Connection Design
Structural Steel Connection Design and detailing is essential for structural engineers to produce safe and well-designed structural steel buildings. Member design is usually simple, but connection design requires a full understanding of the various limit states and considerations to keep in mind when putting together steel members. This webinar will provide you with requirements, limit states and techniques for effective and lasting connection design.Webinar Details
Listen in on our live and interactive webinar covering connection design, specific types of connections, limit states to be considered for each type, and field-proven methods to design steel connections.Date: Thursday | October 21. 2021 | 2 - 4 pm ET Credits: 2 PDH Units
Learning Objectives
- Identify the limit states for connection design.
- Determine the limit states that apply to the connection at hand.

The course was a good overview of the failure modes to check for in connection design. Likewise, the suggestions / considerations for economical connection design at the end were a good refresher. No new material for the experienced designer / detailer, but a good overview of what to consider when designing.
Good refresher
This course was not very good.
– The presenter was knowledgeable, but for the first 90 minutes, he did not present information that was not easily attainable in the existing literature.
– The design tips at the end were very good.
– The test was terrible and appears to contradict several statement directly in the presentation materials.
– There were no calculation examples given, which would have been much better for showing how and when to consider the different limit states.
– There was no depth to the content. All I learned was more of the calculations that are detailed in the Steel Construction Manual. I learned nothing I didn’t already know about HOW to perform those calculations.
– There were substantial technical difficulties with the webinar itself.
A very good overview for someone looking for working knowledge f the subject matter.
This was a good contrast to “Design” – a systematic “Check” system, rather. Very nice!
The course was a good review of the various limit states of connection design. Also, it served as a user guide (refresher) to the AISC tables that are available for common applications.
