Architects and Engineers are not always involved in all aspects of the development process (from project inception (including Owner’s feasibility) through real estate, design, construction, and the warranty period. This course covers the basics of the entire development process investigating some areas such as real estate due diligence, causes and remedies associated with claims and change orders, basics of critical path method (CPM) scheduling and how the manage potential and requested time extensions from the contractor during construction, cost control during construction, material, equipment, and labor management, safety, earned value, commissioning, mobilization, and closeout.
Learning Objective:
At the successful conclusion of this course, you will learn the following knowledge and skills:- Differentiate between project types.
- Identify the entities involved in particular types of construction projects.
- Identify and describe the stages of a project.
- Understand due diligence and feasibility from the Owner’s perspective.
- Gain knowledge and understanding of activities required of the contractor prior, during, and after construction.
- Identify and understand all of the causes and issues associated with change orders and claims.
- Understand the various types of dispute resolution methods.
- Understand the basics of critical path scheduling including arrow and node diagrams, calculating the critical path, total float, free float, and interfering float.
- Understand the basics of cost control and be able to better manage costs during construction.

The only thing provided with this is the Powerpoint slides and the notes the presenter used with the slides (including all typos), but none of the discussion, no explanation of what the various acronyms mean, and no real transfer of information. There were at least two questions on the quiz that were covered in discussion, but not covered in the notes and slides. The quiz question on the 80-20 rule was marked wrong even though the answer I chose was a direct quote from the notes. I got the PDH, but don’t feel like I learned anything.
