PDH UNITS: 3
How can you best design coffer dam structures? Coffer dam structures are constructed to temporarily control river flow and permit navigation during construction of a permanent dam or dam and lock structure. Our course developed by expert J. Paul Guyer, PE is intended to help you design coffer dam structures. In particular, this engineering, online, PDH-approved course introduces the types of coffer dam structures and the necessary site investigations, planning, design and construction issues. Additionally, geotechnical considerations, analysis, and design procedures are discussed as well as construction considerations and instrumentation best practices. Special emphasis is placed on all aspects of cellular coffer dam structures, such as planning, hydraulic considerations, and layout.
Course Outline
1. INTRODUCTION 2. PLANNING, LAYOUT, AND ELEMENTS OF COFFER DAMS 3. GEOTECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS 4. FOUNDATION TREATMENT 5. SOURCES AND PROPERTIES OF CELL FILL 6. SEEPAGE CONTROL 7. FOUNDATION UNDERSEEPAGE 8. SEISMIC CONSIDERATIONSLearning Objectives
At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:- Three general types of cellular coffer dam structures
- How to approach planning and layout of coffer dam elements
- Importance of staging of construction
- When and how to employ hydraulic model studies during project planning
- How to provide scour protection during the life of the coffer dam
- How to design tie-ins to land and existing structures
- How to address geotechnical considerations in design and construction
