Intended Audience: Civil & Structure Engineers.

PDH UNITS: 3

This course presents a state-of-the-art on seismic isolation and the most important applications. After a brief introduction on the basic concepts of seismic isolation, applications to new strategic and public buildings are shown, as well as to new residential buildings, pointing out the very good behavior shown by the seismically isolated structures during real seismic events. Then, attention is focused on the retrofit of existing buildings, which represents the real challenge for the future. The most interesting applications on existing reinforced concrete, masonry and historic structures are shown, pointing out the specific challenges for each case. The objective of this course is to assist a licensed design professional, forensic structural engineers, consulting engineers or/and a licensed general contractor to deeply know, and understand the behavior of seismic isolated structures (concrete, masonry, and cultural heritage buildings) and its applications in buildings worldwide.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • Seismic isolation technique
  • Types of Base Isolation Devices
  • The importance of design codes in the seismic isolation of structures
  • Overview of the application of seismic isolation
  • Seismic isolation in masonry buildings
  • Retrofit of reinforced concrete buildings
  • Retrofit of masonry and cultural heritage buildings
  • Monitoring of seismic isolated buildings
