Dr. Ibrahim M. Metwally, is a professor of concrete structures at the Concrete Structures Research Institute at the Housing and Building National Research Center, Giza, Egypt. He holds B. Sc., M. Sc., and Ph.D. in structural engineering. Experienced in both the academic and industrial fields. His research interests include structural assessment and retrofitting of existing structures under different loading conditions, plus the challenges facing the engineer during the analysis, design, and construction of tall buildings. He has been heavily involved in structural design, performance-based seismic design/assessment, retrofitting, and testing. Professor Metwally is a member of several professional committees including the Egyptian Code for Design and Construction of Concrete Structures , the Egyptian Code for the Use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) in Construction Fields & the Egyptian Code for Repair and Strengthening of RC Structures. He is registered as a senior structural consultant at DRSO of the Ministry of Housing of Egypt; he has designed and evaluated many structural designs for huge projects in Egypt and the Arabian Gulf region. Dr. Metwally is licensed as a Professional Engineer(PE) by the Wyoming Board of Professional Engineers in the USA. His extensive hands-on experience includes the structural design and analysis of multi-story buildings using structural steel, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned and pre-stressed concrete, deep foundations, and structural masonry. He provided structural forensic studies and structural damage assessments throughout many locations worldwide. He prepared many well-written structural forensic reports. Dr. Metwally is also registered as a structural consultant in the field of seismic assessment of existing buildings at the Applied Technology Council(ATC) of FEMA in California, USA. Dr. Metwally served as a credible expert witness and he analyzed and evaluated the cause of failures in a wide variety of structures, such as bridges, buildings, and industrial structures under different extreme loading conditions including checking stability for semi-collapsed R.C. buildings and preparing technical reports for repair works as well.
