When it comes to specifying the perfect HVAC system design for a client, the first step in getting what you specify is establishing appropriate product selection criteria during the project planning phases. This course developed by Steven Liescheidt, PE, CCS, CCPR describes underlying principles in HVAC product selection, starting with understanding client needs and desires and concluding with the evaluation of product performance. Selecting and specifying HVAC products is a crucial part of HVAC system design; however, holding the specification at the time of submittal reviews and ensuring that HVAC products perform in accordance with design intent is where engineers needs to be diligent in the evaluation phase of the HVAC product selection process. Specifically, this online engineering course will discuss why the specification of an HVAC product is part of the planning phase and the 4 different forms of specification. Review of proposed substitutions of other products, the submittal review, site visits, and punch lists are all part of the contractors' implementation phase; however, these steps are also the start of the engineer's evaluation phase. Project closeout, occupancy of the facility, and ultimate use by the owner completes the evaluation process.
